In September 2020, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/74/299 “Improving global road safety”, proclaiming the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, with the ambitious target of preventing at least 50% of road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. WHO and the UN regional commissions, in cooperation with other partners in the UN Road Safety Collaboration, have developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action, to be released in October 2021. 

The Second Decade of Action for Road Safety will continue to reinforce 12 Global Road Safety Performance Targets, including Target 3: All new roads to be 3-star or better and Target 4: >75% of travel on the equivalent of 3-star or better for all by 2030. The Global Plan also reflects the Stockholm Declaration’s promotion of policies to promote walking, cycling and using public transport as inherently healthy and environmentally sound modes of transport.(who.int). 

The works under decade of action on road safety 2011-2020 did not result targeted outcome in Nepal. However, the need for action and change is more pronounced than ever. The new Decade of Action provides the opportunity to learn from lessons learned from other countries on what works and what doesn’t, strengthening partnership and collaboration, conducting research, and mobilization of resources towards desired outcome.
