Another international airport has been the need of Nepal since the one and only in operation busy Tribhuvan international airport. So, the Bhairahawa Airport is being upgraded to a new International Airport and named as Gautam Buddha International Airport which can attract potential tourists from the world who are specifically interested to visit the birth place of Lord Gautam Buddha. The project was approved on 2009 by Asian Development Bank for completion of the project by 2015 with a total cost of upgrading $ 85.6 million to the then GBA. By 2020, a physical progress has reached a total of 85.5% where most of the communication works are still remaining because of the halt of the transportation problems.

With the soft loan from China Exim Bank, the project Pokhara Regional International Airport started its construction from April 2016. Recently, rigid pavement construction works has been completed where other physical works are remaining such as taxiway, terminal buildings and other physical features. This is also considered as one of the physical infrastructure which would aid to the touristic arrival in Nepal to those who would like to avoid congested Kathmandu.
