Star Rating for Schools
This study has prepared ratings for schools calculated on various spot locations using the coding and application “Star Rating for Schools” created by iRAP. Coding and application has been created using evidence based research regarding how road infrastructures impact on safety. The spots are rated from 1 to 5 stars while 1
being the least safe and 5 being the safest. Firstly the risk is measured and subsequently cost effective interventions are planned to increase the ratings as desired. Research has shown that each increment in star rating would lead to a 50% decrease in road accidents related to death or serious injury risks, ensuring
children and adolescents travel safely to and from school. (iRAP star rating for schools, 2017)
The objectives of the study were:
1. To measure road related risks pedestrian children and young adults are exposed to at spots nearby school for carrying out initial star rating.
2. To suggest required possible safety interventions for increasing the ratings to at least three stars or better.
3. To reassess the location after updating safety interventions and carry out final star rating.
Data were collected for 39 parameters for each school related to the road environment, road type, road characteristics, school zone, sidewalks, crossings, traffic flow, intersections, curves, and speed. Collected data were analyzed using the Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) web application. The initial star ratings of the schools were one star, two stars three stars and four stars; but after implementing safety measures, the ratings increased to three to five stars, with a significant reduction in risk factor scores. The implementation of countermeasures resulted in a reduction in operating speed by 20-40% which shows proper implementation backup with awareness and enforcement will lead to effectiveness of traffic sign. However, there is still room for improvement to achieve a five-star safety rating, and promoting awareness and enforcing speed control can further enhance safety in school zones.
