Background: Safe and Sustainable Travel Nepal (SSTN) is working in collaboration with Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) and University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) on a four-year project to improve road safety — ‘Safe Systems for Enabling Traffic Injury Prevention in Nepal’ or SAFETrIP Nepal. Our project will involve members of the public to work with their local palikas to improve the safety of their local roads. SSTN will help members of the public to share their views and experiences of travelling on the road. This information will help the researchers develop the projects so that they address the needs of the public. To conduct its activities, SSTN has been mobilizing four Community Road Safety Mobilizers (CRSM) in the eight local bodies.

Roles and Responsibilities: The CRSM will help the project team to involve the public in two municipalities and help members of the public engage in projects on safer public transport and better care following a road crash. He/She will be stationed at KMC Office at Duwakot with frequent visits to the two municipalities. They will be required to work mostly independently, but with supervision from the research team who are based at Kathmandu Medical College at Duwakot, Bhaktapur.  

The responsibilities of a community road safety mobiliser are as following:

  1. General
    – Build rapport, establish coordination and professional relations with community road safety forum and road safety committee, community groups, Palikas and ward-level stakeholders, and keep details of meetings in a specified format.
    – Assist SSTN in planning field activities related to SAFETrIP and support implementation such as orientation and training programmes as well as in planning dissemination activities.
    – Support the collection and delivering information, and data management associated to community engagement adn involvement and relevant tasks as specified in SAFETrIP Nepal programme.

  2. Specific Field Tasks:
    Most of the activities of community road safety mobiliser will be based in Banepa Municipality and Panauti Municipality and the scope of work covers, but is not limited to the following:
    – Conduct meetings with the municipality, commmunity road safety forum, Road Safety Committee and relevant stakeholders, and supports group discussions, recording participants views by writing, audio recording or videoing as agreed with the research team.
    – Establish a good network and professional relationship for community-level activities with local government, ward-level stakeholders, and community people.
    – Support  the project team in planning for orientation and training activities in the target areas and assists technical teams in monitoring and evaluating related activities.
    – Ensures the need of beneficiaries and execute quality implementation of community-based activities in consultation with relevant stakeholder.
    – Ensure that community mobilization activities are reaching targeted beneficiaries through capaity development actvivities and knolwedge and awareness-raising campaigns.
    – Orgaize and mobilize communities, schools, NGOs and other community-based organizations for the need identification in safety and injuries.
    – Liaise and link between CBOs and local NGOs for the sustainability of project activiites.
    – Periodically organises meetings of the Local Road Safety Forum to share project work plan and get opinions of the Local Road Safety Forum and Road Safety Committee members.
    – Lead or support in any other tasks as specified by Community Engagement and Involvement Lead or SSTN and KMC.
  3. Record keeping
    – Keep records of daily activities in a logbook provided by the SAFETrIP Nepal Project.
    – Record the minutes of all Community Road Safety Forum meetings keep records of the meetings.
    – Take photographs of all meetings and maintain its log with a short caption and other relevant details.
    – Document how involvement of the public and stakeholders helps to reduce road traffic crashes and injuries in the community.
    – Provide a monthly progress report to SSTN in the specified format and support the research team to prepare quarterly reports.
    – Communicate regularly with the SAFETrIP project teams at SSTN and KMC

Skill and Qualifications:
– Higher Secondary level (10+2) in any relevant subjects.
– Good communication skill in both written and spoken Nepali and English.
– Excellent interpersonal communication and social skills.
– Preferable experience of road safety related works (awareness, advocacy, or research works) or academic background on road safety.
– Able to work in a team and initiate new ideas on their own during the various phase of the project.
– Able to organize meetings, workshop and disseminate the information.
– Females and local resident of the respective palikas are highly encouraged to apply.

Remuneration: As per SSTN Rules and Regulations. Taxes are applicable
